Ms Anna Carolina Tortora heads the Department of Innovation, Research and Development for the Terna Group, the Italian TSO. An MIT alumna with an Aerospace Engineering background, Ms Tortora first ventured into the energy field within Terna’s New Business Development department, where she actively advocated for the deployment of Energy Storage within the Italian national HV grid. Following her efforts, Terna was able to secure the Italian Energy Authority’s authorization to install 75 MW of electrochemical Energy Storage solutions within its substations, 40 MW of which are currently under  Ms Tortora’s direct responsibility. Today her activities range from the study of new grid technologies and protocols, to special projects within the areas of Energy Efficiency and Clean Tech, to the study and modeling of Active Demand applications in Italy; she remains, however an energy storage enthusiast, and is recognized as one of EESS’ best known supporters and proponents in the international energy scene.
